      El verbo hay<\/h3>\nHay<\/em><\/strong> comes from the verb haber<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 and it means \u201cthere is.\u201d However, hay<\/em><\/strong> is the only form used in the present tense for both singular and plural descriptions, so it also means \u201cthere are.\u201d\n

      • \u00bfQu\u00e9 hay<\/strong> en tu mochila? (What is there in your backpack?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nWhen making negative statements, the article is usually not included after the verb:\n

        • En mi cuarto, no hay<\/strong> cortinas. (In my bedroom there aren\u2019t any curtains.)<\/li>\n \t
        • No hay<\/strong> cartera en su mochila. (There\u2019s no wallet in her backpack.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nHay<\/em><\/strong> is never followed by the definite article (el,la,los,las), <\/em>only by indefinite articles, numbers or adjectives of quantity, or just nouns.\n
